New Delhi: UNESCO UNESCO has given the Kumbh Mela an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in India. Kumbh Mela has been included in UNESCO representative list in the 12th session of December 4-9, in Jeju, South Korea.

This international recognition of the Kumbh Mela is the third consecutive title of any Indian Sanskrit heritage after Yog and Navroj. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the UNESCO Specialist Committee has decided to include the Kumbh Mela in the representative list after considering the proposals from all the member countries.

The committee found that Kumbh Mela was the largest peaceful religious conference on earth, which is in line with all existing international human rights treaties. People participate in different sections without any discrimination. The Expert Committee believed that as a religious event, the tolerance and adjustment seen in Kumbh Mela is an example for the whole world.

UNESCO also acknowledged that knowledge related to Kumbh Mela reaches one generation to second generation through the Guru-disciple tradition. Due to this the continuation of organizing the fair is also ensured. It is important that Kumbh Mela is celebrated in Haridwar, Allahabad, Ujjain and NashikThe story of organizing kumbh is associated with the Goddess Kumbh and the nectar of the sea manthan.

UNESCO decided to ensure intangible cultural heritage through an international treaty in the General Assembly held in 2003. According to the agreement made in the United Nations organization, the natural heritage is more than the tangible things like the place, the building and the objects.
