Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to install additional CCTV cameras and necessary equipment in 43 jails in the state to effectively control the incidents of prisoners being absconding, imprisonment in prisons etc. Guidelines have been given to the Inspector General (Prison Administration) in this regard.

According to the mandate, additional CCTV cameras, conjunctive equipment and suitable cabling will be established in 43 jails of the state including the District Prison, Sonbhadra and Baghpat. For this the approval of the state government has already been approved of Rs. 6.01 crore.

Out of the sanctioned amount, the amount of Rs 2,40,44,384 has been made available to the working institution in advance. The Inspector General will be responsible for ensuring the quality and rate of the equipment being purchased.

This is considered to be a big step in terms of preventing prisoners' death. Last year, a complaint was received by National Human Rights, in which it was said that 1,960 people died in Central Jail, District Jail, Women Prisons and Special Jails between 2012 and 2017. Most of this happened in Bareilly prisons.
